Historical Background

Lersi are hermit-sage figures occupying an important position within Thai and wider Southeast Asian sacred traditions.

They are associated with teachers, meditation, healing, traditional knowledge and various branches of Wicha.

Different Lersi forms may embody different qualities.

The Cow-Head Lersi belongs to a much less commonly encountered form of this imagery.

Within the interpretation surrounding Por Sala Tan's piece, the cow represents earth-bound wisdom, patience, endurance and service.

Its strength is not expressed through aggression.

Instead, the animal remains grounded, steady and watchful.

This gives the Cow-Head Lersi a different character from fierce guardian imagery. It represents the ability to remain calm and continue forward even when the surrounding circumstances are uncertain.

The symbolism also draws upon the broader meeting of Brahmanic, animist and forest-hermit traditions found throughout Southeast Asian spiritual culture.

Origins of the Materials

Several important materials were selected for this Lersi.

Sacred cave soil was gathered during Por Sala Tan's retreat. Within his practice, cave environments were particularly connected with seclusion, meditation and the unseen guardians traditionally associated with such places.

The piece also incorporates wood from Mount Popa in Burma.

Mount Popa occupies an important place within Burmese spiritual culture and is particularly associated with the country's Nat traditions. For Por Sala Tan, material originating from such a spiritually significant location provided another connection between the physical artifact and the wider spirit traditions with which he worked.

A focus bead was installed at the bottom.

Rather than being merely decorative, the bead provides a concentrated physical point within the construction of the piece.

The finished Lersi was then treated with red and gold colouring, giving the artifact the strongly aged red-gold appearance visible today.

The origins of this piece are closely connected with Samadhi and meditative retreat.

During a period of silence and deeper meditation, Por Sala Tan received the conception for the Cow-Head Lersi through his inner meditative experience.

Physical Details

A seated Lersi Hua Wua, or Cow-Head Lersi, created by Por Sala Tan and distinguished by its strongly modelled bovine head, prominent ears, tall headdress and composed seated posture. The surface carries an aged deep-red finish with remaining applications of gold, creating considerable variation across the face, body and base. Sacred materials associated with Por Sala Tan's retreat and travels were incorporated into its preparation, including sacred cave soil and Mount Popa wood. A dedicated focus bead is installed at the bottom of the figure, forming an important part of its meditation and concentration purpose. The piece is presently preserved within a clear protective casing.
