Yin Tong Pim – Chiang Mai 700-Year Commemoration

Among the less commonly encountered forms from this celebrated B.E. 2538 commemorative batch is the Yin Tong Pim, a sacred design traditionally associated with Metta, attraction, harmony and human relationships.

While the Somdej forms of the series are generally sought for their broader qualities of spiritual strength, protection and Baramee, the Yin Tong carries a distinctly softer character. Its symbolism is closely connected with affection, interpersonal warmth, understanding and the ability to create favourable relationships with those around us.

Produced in considerably smaller numbers than the principal forms of the series, the Yin Tong was made from the same important Lamphun powder mixture and underwent the same major consecration cycle.

Ancient Lamphun Powders

At the heart of this batch is an exceptional body of old sacred material.

More than 80% of the base mixture was said to consist of ancient Lamphun relic powders, associated with the old Hariphunchai tradition and materials dating back more than 1,300 years, to the historical period connected with Phra Rod of Lamphun.

Such old powders were treasured not simply for their age. Within the traditional understanding of Thai sacred objects, materials preserved from important Buddhist sites and earlier generations of sacred images carry the accumulated Baramee and spiritual lineage of the places from which they originated.

The powders were therefore regarded as particularly suitable for qualities traditionally associated with:

• Metta Maha Niyom – kindness, popularity and favourable treatment
• Choke Lap – good fortune and favourable opportunities
• Baramee – spiritual presence and personal authority
• Protection from harmful or unfavourable influences

The importance attached to these materials was such that Luang Phor Koon himself reportedly requested a portion of the powder for use in his own future sacred-object production. In return, he participated directly in the blessing of the commemorative batch.

This created an unusual meeting of two traditions: ancient Lamphun and Lanna sacred material combined with the blessing lineage of Luang Phor Koon of Wat Ban Rai.

The Consecration

The batch did not rely upon a single ceremony. Instead, the materials and completed amulets passed through a multi-stage consecration process.

First Blessing – Luang Phor Koon, Wat Ban Rai

Before the amulets were pressed, the sacred powder mixture was brought to Luang Phor Koon, who blessed and empowered the raw materials.

This meant that his blessing was already incorporated into the sacred substance from which each amulet would eventually be formed.

Chiang Mai 700-Year Commemorative Ceremony

The batch subsequently entered the major northern consecration connected with the celebration of Chiang Mai's 700th anniversary.

The ceremony at Wat Phra Singh brought together respected monks of the northern tradition, adding the spiritual character and lineage of Lanna Buddhism to the already blessed materials.

Final Blessing – Wat Ban Rai, October B.E. 2538

After the amulets had been pressed into their completed forms, they were returned to Luang Phor Koon at Wat Ban Rai.

A final blessing and mantra cycle was then performed over the completed batch, bringing the consecration process to its conclusion.

For the Yin Tong form, collectors traditionally associate these blessings especially strongly with Metta, charm, favourable relationships and peaceful influence.

Yin Tong – The Relationship Pim

The Yin Tong is an interesting part of this series precisely because its purpose differs from the more familiar Somdej forms.

Its imagery has traditionally been associated with the bond between two people and the qualities that allow relationships to develop naturally: affection, understanding, attraction, compassion and emotional harmony.

For this reason, devotees commonly choose Yin Tong-type amulets for matters involving:

Love & Partnership
Traditionally carried for Metta between partners, improving understanding and encouraging a warmer relationship.

Family Harmony
Suitable for those wishing to encourage better communication and reduce unnecessary friction within the family.

Business & Clients
Metta is not limited to romance. For merchants and people who deal with customers, negotiations or management, favourable human relationships can be equally important.

Social Relationships
Traditionally associated with being received more warmly by others and creating a more harmonious environment around the wearer.

Rather than being understood simply as an amulet for attracting romance, the older concept of Yin Tong is therefore better understood through Metta — the cultivation of favourable human connection.

A Less Common Form From an Important Batch

Most collectors encountering this B.E. 2538 series naturally gravitate toward the Somdej forms, particularly the better-known gem-inlaid examples.

The Yin Tong Pim appears considerably less frequently, making it an interesting choice for collectors who already understand the history of the Chiang Mai commemorative batch but want one of its more unusual forms.

It combines three important elements within a single piece:

ancient Lamphun sacred powders, the great Chiang Mai commemorative consecration, and the direct involvement of Luang Phor Koon.

For devotees whose work or personal life depends heavily upon relationships with others, it is also one of the most symbolically appropriate forms from the entire series.
