Historical Background
Borom Khru Phu Phu Aung occupies a unique place within Burmese spiritual tradition. He is remembered as a legendary hermit and accomplished meditation master whose life became intertwined with that of King Bayinnaung, the celebrated ruler remembered throughout Southeast Asia as the "Victor of Ten Directions."
Traditional accounts describe Borom Khru Phu Phu Aung as one of King Bayinnaung's principal spiritual teachers. One of the best-known legends recounts how the hermit demonstrated his extraordinary spiritual accomplishment by ascending through the air to pay homage at the sacred Shwedagon Pagoda before the eyes of countless witnesses. The event inspired such deep faith that King Bayinnaung formally became his disciple and sought his continual spiritual guidance.
Out of reverence for his teacher, the king is said to have commissioned sacred amulets depicting the Mahamuni Buddha on one side while portraying Borom Khru Phu Phu Aung flying through the air on the reverse. These amulets were consecrated by the hermit before being distributed to soldiers entering military campaigns, where they were believed to grant courage, protection and victory.
According to long-preserved tradition, many of these sacred amulets were later concealed within caves in present-day Myanmar. Centuries afterwards, villagers reportedly rediscovered one such cache and informed Luang Por Uttama, who had encouraged the search for these ancient sacred objects. Luang Por Uttama subsequently brought many of these discoveries back to Thailand, distributing them among disciples and collectors. These finds later became associated with the famous Bayinnaung Yod Khunpon amulets, now regarded as some of the most desirable Burmese-related sacred objects in Thailand.
Even today, many Burmese practitioners continue to believe that Borom Khru Phu Phu Aung never truly passed away. Instead, tradition holds that he remains hidden within the forests bordering Myanmar, continuing to guide worthy disciples, preserve ancient medicinal knowledge and safeguard the authentic transmission of Burmese mystical teachings.
The Creator
This B.E. 2529 issue was consecrated by Kruba Sri Ong, also respectfully known as Luang Phor Siong, a highly respected Northern Thai meditation master associated with Wat Banphot Sathit in Lampang Province.
Born on 11 January B.E. 2454 (1912), he entered monastic life as a novice at only fourteen years of age at Wat Phra Singh in Chiang Rai. Throughout his monastic career he became widely respected for his mastery of Vipassana meditation, traditional Lanna astrology (Horasart), sacred inscriptions and the creation of powerful protective talismans. His spiritual work extended throughout several Northern Thai temples, including Wat Ban Phosetthi and Wat Banphot Sathit, where many disciples sought his blessings and instruction.
Among collectors, Kruba Sri Ong's creations are appreciated for preserving the older Northern Lanna traditions that blend Buddhist practice with centuries-old Burmese and Lanna esoteric knowledge.
