Sacred Craftsmanship

This Phra Pikanet is an early hand-carved creation by Por Sala Tan, a Northern Thai white-robed master recognised for his knowledge of traditional Lanna Wicha, sacred materials and the preparation of personalised ritual objects.

Each piece was individually handmade from carefully prepared sacred materials. Natural variations in carving, colour, texture and the arrangement of embedded ritual components make every example unique.

Personal Experiences Shared by Luksits

The origins of this Phra Pikanet are closely connected with a personal request from one of Por Sala Tan's devoted Luksits.

The disciple had maintained a strong devotion to Phra Pikanet and regularly sought blessings before important business dealings, examinations and decisions requiring concentration.

Believing that younger followers and working adults could benefit from a small sacred object associated with wisdom and opportunity, he approached Por Sala Tan with the idea of creating a limited batch.

This request eventually led to the hand-carved Phra Pikanet series.

Among older devotees, Phra Pikanet was particularly appreciated by students preparing for examinations, individuals beginning new careers and business owners facing complicated decisions.

Some followers described feeling more composed when approaching difficult conversations or negotiations, while others associated the amulet with greater confidence in planning and decision-making.

The Salika components were especially valued by individuals whose work depended upon communication. Salespeople, traders and those regularly dealing with customers regarded the combination as suitable for encouraging smoother conversations and favourable responses.

Phra Sivali's inclusion was also meaningful to followers seeking stability, opportunities and assistance from others during difficult periods.

Over time, such pieces can develop a strong personal significance for their owners, particularly when carried regularly during important periods of work, study or business development.

Summary

This Phra Pikanet is a limited hand-carved amulet created by Por Sala Tan during approximately the same period as his earlier Bo Bo Aung-related sacred objects.

Carved from Graduk Chang Gradeng, the figure was produced following a request from a close disciple who wished to create a small batch dedicated to wisdom, education, business advancement and the removal of obstacles.

The reverse contains Salika Takrut and Phra Sivali-related sacred substances, combining three complementary forms of traditional blessing.

Phra Pikanet represents wisdom, learning, creativity and overcoming difficulties. Salika is associated with persuasive speech, Metta and favourable communication, while Phra Sivali is traditionally connected with livelihood, opportunities and assistance from benefactors.

Together, these elements reflect Por Sala Tan's belief that successful progress requires more than knowledge alone. Clear judgement must also be accompanied by suitable opportunities, effective communication and the goodwill of others.

The small production quantity, handmade craftsmanship and unusual combination of sacred materials make this an interesting example of his earlier ritual creations.

Historical Background

Por Sala Tan was a Northern Thai white-robed master whose practices drew upon traditional Lanna folk Wicha, animist beliefs, sacred inscriptions and ritual knowledge transmitted through earlier generations of teachers.

During his earlier years, many sacred objects were created in small quantities at the request of local villagers, traders, students and close disciples.

Unlike later commercial amulet production, these early creations were often prepared individually within modest home-based or local ritual settings.

The emphasis was placed upon the intended purpose of the object, the suitability of its materials and the blessing methods performed by the master.

This Phra Pikanet emerged during approximately the same working period as Por Sala Tan's older Bo Bo Aung batches, when he was preparing personalised sacred objects combining traditional Buddhist blessings with Northern Thai and Burmese-influenced folk Wicha.

Phra Pikanet, the Thai representation of Ganesha, is widely respected as a deity associated with wisdom, knowledge, artistic ability, learning and the removal of obstacles.

Originally rooted in Hindu traditions, devotion to Ganesha became well established throughout Thailand, where he is particularly respected by students, artists, performers, merchants and individuals seeking success in intellectual or creative pursuits.

Within Northern Thai folk practices, Phra Pikanet may also be incorporated into sacred objects intended to support professional advancement, clear judgement and favourable opportunities.

The decision to combine Phra Pikanet with Salika and Phra Sivali materials reflects the practical character of Por Sala Tan's Wicha.

Rather than concentrating solely on academic intelligence or spiritual wisdom, the amulet was prepared to address the broader circumstances that influence everyday progress.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Origins of the Materials

The principal material used in this Phra Pikanet is Graduk Chang Gradeng, an old ritual material traditionally associated with sacred craftsmanship in Northern Thai and neighbouring regional practices.

Within folk Wicha, certain naturally derived materials are believed to retain the influence of repeated chanting, ceremonial preparation and prolonged exposure to sacred substances.

Por Sala Tan was known for selecting materials according to their traditional associations and perceived suitability for particular forms of Wicha.

The Graduk Chang Gradeng was individually carved into the seated form of Phra Pikanet, preserving the natural characteristics of the original material.

The reverse contains two important ritual components.

Salika Takrut

Salika is traditionally associated with persuasive speech, attraction, negotiation and harmonious communication.

Its inclusion was intended to complement Phra Pikanet's wisdom-related blessings, particularly for individuals whose success depended upon presenting ideas clearly and maintaining favourable relationships.

Phra Sivali Sacred Materials

The backing compound also contains sacred substances associated with Phra Sivali, a revered Buddhist disciple traditionally connected with abundance, sustenance, favourable journeys and the support of benefactors.

Within Thai amulet traditions, Phra Sivali is especially respected for blessings concerning livelihood, opportunities and the ability to receive assistance when needed.

The dark backing compound holds these materials together, forming a ritual foundation behind the carved figure.

This combination of Graduk Chang Graden, Salika Takrut and Phra Sivali materials reflects Por Sala Tan's approach to creating sacred objects with complementary spiritual purposes.

Ritual

The principal invocations were associated with Phra Pikanet, focusing upon wisdom, learning, clear judgement and the removal of obstacles.

Salika-related chanting was incorporated to complement these qualities through Metta, favourable speech and harmonious communication.

The Phra Sivali materials introduced the traditional blessings of livelihood, opportunity and assistance from others.

According to the lineage account, the Takrut components were inserted after the principal chanting process, allowing the completed amulet to contain the ritual elements associated with its intended purpose.

Por Sala Tan regarded the internal construction as an important part of the sacred object, with the backing materials serving as carriers for the blessings accumulated during preparation.

The finished amulets were subsequently empowered according to his traditional Wicha before being distributed among the small circle of devotees for whom they had been created.

Blessings and Effects

This Phra Pikanet combines the traditional blessings of wisdom, obstacle removal, Metta and favourable opportunities.

Its principal attributed effects include:

  • Wisdom and Learning: Supporting concentration, memory, intellectual clarity and confidence during examinations or studies.

  • Removal of Obstacles: Helping devotees approach difficulties with clearer judgement and overcome setbacks in work, education and personal development.

  • Career and Business Advancement: Associated with professional progress, sound decision-making, creativity and successful planning.

  • Phra Sivali Fortune and Opportunities: Traditionally connected with livelihood, favourable timing, assistance from benefactors and smooth journeys.

  • Confidence and Personal Development: Supporting composure, adaptability and determination when entering new stages of life.

The combination of Phra Pikanet, Salika Takrut and Phra Sivali sacred materials reflects a balanced approach to wisdom, communication and worldly advancement. These blessings remain matters of traditional spiritual belief.

Modern Application

This Phra Pikanet remains particularly relevant to individuals whose daily responsibilities require concentration, communication and effective decision-making.

Students may appreciate its traditional association with learning, examinations and intellectual development.

Business owners, entrepreneurs and professionals may favour the combination of Phra Pikanet and Phra Sivali for its symbolic connection with planning, opportunities and steady career progress.

Those involved in sales, marketing, customer relations and negotiation may place greater emphasis on the Salika components, traditionally associated with favourable speech and interpersonal attraction.

Creative professionals, designers, performers and individuals working in artistic fields may also find meaning in Phra Pikanet's longstanding association with creativity and knowledge.

Measuring approximately 1 inch, the amulet is compact enough for everyday carrying.

It may be worn discreetly, kept in a work bag or placed respectfully near a study table or workspace.

For collectors, the piece also represents an earlier period of Por Sala Tan's craftsmanship, when individual carving and small-batch preparation remained central to his ritual work.

Personal Notes

What makes this Phra Pikanet particularly interesting is the personal request that led to its creation.

Unlike many amulets produced for general distribution, this batch originated from the devotion of one of Por Sala Tan's close Luksits, who wished to make the blessings of Phra Pikanet accessible to younger followers, students and business owners.

The choice of Graduk Chang Gradeng and the individually carved construction reflect the older methods employed during Por Sala Tan's earlier period.

The reverse is equally significant.

Rather than relying solely upon Phra Pikanet's traditional association with wisdom and obstacle removal, Por Sala Tan incorporated Salika Takrut and Phra Sivali sacred materials to address the practical circumstances surrounding everyday success.

This reflects an important principle found in many traditional folk Wicha practices: knowledge and determination are valuable, but opportunities, communication and assistance from others also influence a person's progress.

Personally, I have always appreciated the character of smaller handmade pieces from this period. Their natural irregularities and individual craftsmanship distinguish them from later mass-produced amulets.

For collectors familiar with Por Sala Tan's work, this Phra Pikanet represents an early personalised creation combining wisdom, Metta, favourable opportunities and the practical teachings of traditional Northern Thai Wicha.
