The Graduk Chang Graden

Graduk Chang Graden forms the principal sacred material used to create this Nang Kwak.

The history of this particular material is especially significant.

According to the provenance passed together with it, the raw Graduk Chang Graden had previously belonged to an elderly Burmese shaman. He kept the material for more than twenty years and blessed it daily as part of his spiritual practice.

It therefore already carried a long ritual history when it eventually reached Por Sala Tan.

Por Sala Tan subsequently prepared the material according to his own lineage before individually handcrafting each Nang Kwak.

The hand-working process gives each figure its own character. Small differences in shape, surface, lacquer and gold application are natural features of individually crafted examples.

Sacred Materials & Ritual

The ritual construction continues inside the figure.

The bottom was prepared with a Takrut, Si Pheng Guman and Nam Man Prai.

The Takrut contains sacred inscriptions prepared according to Por Sala Tan's wiccha and forms an important ritual component within the piece.

Por Sala Tan then completed the ritual preparation and consecration according to his wiccha.

The exterior received red lacquer followed by gold foil, creating the traditional finish visible across the figure.

The bottom contains a Takrut, Si Pheng Guman and Nam Man Prai, incorporated as part of Por Sala Tan's ritual preparation.

The surface was finished with red lacquer and gold foil. Areas of red lacquer remain visible beneath and between the gold, creating the characteristic aged red-and-gold appearance.

As each figure was individually handcrafted, natural differences in shape, carving, surface texture, lacquer and gold foil make every example unique.

The photographed piece is protected within a clear fitted casing with a suspension ring.
