Historical Background

This Lersi Narai image belongs to the early working period of Por Sala Tan, when each piece was individually carved and finished under his direct supervision. During this phase of his practice, materials were selected personally and ritual processes were performed in small, deliberate batches.

Lersi Narai is revered within the hermit lineage as a teacher of wicha, meditation discipline, and spiritual authority. In Northern tradition, Lersi figures represent transmission. They are not symbolic ornaments but embodiments of teacher-current and accumulated baramee.

The wood used here carries a specific association. Mai takien kru lek was traditionally linked to the resting and meditation places of hermits. In oral accounts tied to the lineage, Lersi Narai was known to sit beneath takien trees. The material was therefore chosen for alignment, not convenience.

A small number of these images were carved from the inner core of a takien tree that had been struck by lightning. In regional animist understanding, lightning marks a tree as elementally charged. Such wood is regarded as spiritually awakened by natural force.

Origins of the Material

Mai takien kru lek is a dense hardwood long regarded in Northern practice as a vessel for residing spirits. When taken from the inner core of an aged tree, the grain carries weight and stability. When taken from a lightning-struck trunk, the elemental imprint is considered intensified.

This batch was carved from carefully selected sections. The intention was structural integrity and spiritual resonance.

Ritual Process

After carving, each image was hand-painted directly by Por Sala Tan using natural pigments. The painting was not decorative. It was part of the activation sequence, marking key areas of the Lersi form.

A takrut was inserted beneath the base. This served to harmonise the wood’s resident energy with the Lersi embodiment. The process ensured balance between the natural spirit of the material and the invoked teacher-current.

The ritual focus was awakening, guidance, and protective alignment.
