This Utt Ding represents the older Tai Yai form that entered Lanna centuries ago, preserved through hand-carved figures and simple, symbolic imagery. The piece shown here was carved directly from pure nga chang, without any powders, fillers, or internal additions. Every aspect—the form, the surface texture, the weight—comes from a single solid block of nga chang, allowing the blessing to sit directly in the material.
Por Sala Tan preferred this approach: when the material already holds natural baramee, nothing additional is needed except structured chanting, focus, and sealing through ritual.
Form and Cultural Lineage
Utt Ding is one of the most recognised Tai Yai–Lanna charms. Variations include:
-
A single rider on the elephant
-
A rider playing a string instrument
-
Inn-type pairing on the elephant
-
Two riders travelling together
Each form carries its own meaning. This example is the two-rider form, often called Utt Ding Yok Kon. The elephant is the foundation—steady progress, safe passage, and authority—while the two riders represent partnership, supportive relationships, and the human world working in harmony.
The carving style here reflects older northern Tai Yai work: compact proportions, human figures kept simple, and the body of the elephant marked with clean linear accents. The grain, patina, and natural ageing of the nga chang show it is not a modern cast piece but an authentic hand-carving that has matured over time.
Por Sala Tan’s involvement gives the piece a distinct northern occult identity. His lineage emphasises cave practice, boundary rites, cemetery knowledge, and sustained chanting rather than decorative complexity. With Utt Ding, his method is simply: awaken the form, anchor the intention, and close the energy directly into the nga chang block.
Traditional Functions of the Two-Rider Utt Ding
Across Lanna and Tai Yai texts, the two-rider Utt Ding carries the following qualities:
1. Metta and Social Support
Carrying the charm increases likability and reduces interpersonal friction. People respond with warmth, willingness to help, and a sense of trust. This includes both ordinary individuals and higher-ranking figures.
2. Partnership, Love, and Companionship
Old stories link Utt Ding with the handsome merchant and with King Uthen Racha—figures known for gaining loyal companions and affectionate partners wherever they travelled. The two-rider form is especially suited for stabilising relationships, attracting compatible partners, and avoiding loneliness in pivotal life phases.
3. Safe Travel and Movement
Because the imagery itself is a ride, Utt Ding is traditionally worn on journeys. The elephant symbolises grounded movement, giving protection when travelling and helping the wearer pass through uncertain environments safely.
4. Trade, Negotiation, Livelihood
Linked to the merchant legend, Utt Ding helps with smooth communication, client relationships, and deal-making. For traders, business owners, and sales-based livelihoods, this charm is considered reliable for encouraging openness and fair cooperation.
5. Growing Fortune and Opportunity
The classical phrase “go as one, return as two” refers to both relationships and finances. Honest work is believed to multiply rather than diminish. Opportunities appear more consistently, and setbacks ease more quickly.
Por Sala Tan’s consecration style enhances grounding, warding off unseen interference, and strengthening the wearer’s path. These qualities integrate naturally with the traditional function of Utt Ding as a charm for stability, partnership, and fortune that steadily increases.
Material and Energy – The Significance of Pure Nga Chang
Because this piece is carved entirely from nga chang, its energy expression is direct and uninterrupted:
-
Nga chang holds ritual intent exceptionally well once awakened by chanting.
-
The absence of fillers ensures that the blessing saturates the whole body of the object.
-
Its natural warmth and density make it ideal for personal wearing, where prolonged contact slowly harmonises with the owner’s path and intentions.
In older northern traditions, a solid nga chang piece with correct form and correct blessing is preferred over complex constructions. The material carries baramee, the carving provides the vessel, and the master seals the force through sound and intention.
