Deity / Spirit
This is a Phra Ngan Baramee, a vessel created to house a Buddhist-aligned jinn. Unlike the usual depictions of Ngan as mischievous or disruptive spirits, this jinn dedicated itself to studying the Dharma daily with the wish of becoming a Buddhist scholar. Due to its non-human nature, full ordination was impossible.
Historical Background
Por Sala Tan of Fang could not liberate this spirit in the usual way, as its karmic nature was tied to Buddhist practice rather than wandering restlessness. Instead, he arranged for one of his monk disciples (luksit) to ritually transfer and enshrine the spirit into this image. This served as both a liberation and an honor, giving recognition to the jinn’s unusual devotion to Dharma.
Materials
-
The image chosen is a brass Ngan in samadhi posture, representing stability and concentration.
-
A monk’s robe thread (sai sin) was formally bestowed, signifying respect and recognition of its Dharma practice.
-
A lead plate inscribed in Lanna script with the bestowed title was placed beneath the figure, permanently sealing its honor.
-
The entire form is clothed with strands of robe tied around the body, symbolic of ordination status in spirit form.
Blessings and Effects
The enshrined spirit blesses primarily with baramee—the spiritual prestige and accumulated merit of one who devotedly follows the Dharma. This is rare among Ngan-type spirits, who usually serve charm and attraction functions.
-
Baramee: Strength of presence, authority, and karmic prestige.
-
Sanaeh: Natural charm is present and amplified due to the jinn’s spiritual discipline.
-
Mahalap (Wealth): Material fortune, opportunities, and abundance.
-
Protection: The robe and Dharma alignment make this piece steady and far less volatile than ordinary Ngan.
