The Cat Lady Spirit (Mae Prai Bua Meow)

Within Thai necromantic traditions, not all wandering spirits are the same. A woman who dies an unnatural or violent death often becomes a Mae Prai, a restless female spirit whose essence can be bound into wicha for charm, protection, or fortune. Yet among them, there is a more unusual and dangerous transformation—the Cat Spirit, or Mae Prai Bua Meow.

Cause of Transformation

When a Mae Prai’s body is left in an open or unprotected area, stray cats may approach the corpse. In Thai and Southeast Asian belief, if a cat leaps over or circles a dead body, the soul does not pass peacefully into the next realm. Instead, the spirit is jolted back, restless, disturbed, and twisted. This unnatural interference traps the spirit between worlds, giving it feline-like traits of cunning, independence, and predatory energy.

Instead of moving on, the spirit becomes half-woman, half-cat in essence—a Mae Prai with sharper aura, unpredictable temperament, and heightened potency for charm, danger, and attraction. The old masters say that a cat spirit can whisper into human desire more effectively than other prai, making it one of the strongest forms of seneh and influence magic.

The piece shown here depicts the Cat Lady Spirit drawn and inscribed on sacred bone, empowered with ancient yantras. The reverse side contains prai powders, relic fragments, and takrut scrolls to stabilize the wild essence of the spirit. Without this harmonisation, such a being could be dangerous, but under the blessings of a master, its energy is directed toward beneficial effects.
