Phra Pidta – Wat Ampawa (Bangkok)
Historical Background
Wat Ampawa is an old Ayutthaya-period temple located on Issaraphap Road, Ban Chang Lo, Bangkok. In B.E. 2484 (1941), during the wartime era, the temple’s ancient chedi behind the ubosot (ordination hall) was opened, revealing a large quantity of powder-based Phra Pidta and other amulets. These had been sealed since the restoration of the temple around B.E. 2440 (1897).
The amulets were consecrated under the supervision of Somdet Phra Phutthakosajarn (Rit), abbot of Wat Arun, a highly respected master renowned for his expertise in sacred powders and Vipassana meditation. The blessed amulets were then enshrined within the chedi until the opening of the crypt in 2484, when the then-abbot, Phra Khru Paen, distributed them to locals, soldiers, and police during the war years.
The Master – Somdet Phra Phutthakosajarn (Rit)
-
Born B.E. 2380 (1837), ordained as a novice at age 13, later fully ordained in B.E. 2400.
-
He excelled in Pali studies (Grade 5) and became widely recognized for his knowledge in sacred powders and meditation.
-
Held multiple monastic titles, eventually elevated to Somdet Phra Phutthakosajarn in B.E. 2448.
-
Passed away in B.E. 2456 (1913), age 75, after 55 rains.
-
He was said to have studied under Somdet Phra Phutthachan (Toh Prommarangsi) of Wat Rakhang, inheriting profound mastery of powder consecration and incantations.
Blessings and Effects
The Phra Pidta of Wat Ampawa are especially noted for:
-
Mettā Mahā Niyom (Loving-Kindness & Charm) – increasing likability and support from others.
-
Klaew Klaad (Avoiding Dangers) – offering protection during war and times of unrest.
-
Sacred Merit Power – reflecting Somdet Rit’s mastery of sacred powder blends, considered highly auspicious and spiritually protective.
Amulet Characteristics
-
Made of powder mixed with oil, giving them durability and sacred resonance.
-
Common forms include Phra Pidta Cicada Mold (พิมพ์จักจั่น) and other small-bodied Pidta forms.
-
Thousands were originally produced, which is why they remain relatively more accessible than other ancient Bangkok amulets, though rare molds (such as the cicada form) are prized.
