Sacred Craftsmanship

An early Phra Somdej from LP Saweng of Wat Sawangpod, Pathum Thani Province, in B.E. 2495 (1952).

This Phra Somdej was prepared using traditional sacred powders, including Pong Itthijae, and is associated with a consecration involving LP Saweng and his revered master, LP Jong of Wat Na Tang Nok.

Each amulet was individually pressed using carefully prepared sacred powders. Natural variations in texture, colour, mould impressions and ageing give every piece its own distinctive character.

Personal Experiences Shared by Luksits

I personally collected this Phra Somdej from a close Luksit of LP Saweng, who had kept the amulet for many years.

According to him, this particular Phra Somdej was personally passed down by LP Saweng himself, making it more than an ordinary example acquired through the collector's market.

He also shared that the amulet belonged to the early B.E. 2495 batch and had been co-chanted by LP Jong of Wat Na Tang Nok, LP Saweng's own master.

This account is particularly meaningful because LP Saweng maintained a close relationship with LP Jong, having studied under him and participated in religious ceremonies alongside his teacher.

For me, the appeal of this Phra Somdej lies not only in its age or sacred materials, but also in its direct connection to the original owner and the account of how it was received.

Such personal histories are increasingly difficult to encounter, particularly with early amulets whose original owners and associated masters have long since passed away.

Summary

The Phra Somdej, B.E. 2495, is an early sacred powder amulet attributed to LP Saweng of Wat Sawangpod.

Created using traditional Pong Itthijae and other sacred powders, the batch is particularly respected for its association with LP Jong of Wat Na Tang Nok, one of Central Thailand's highly regarded masters.

LP Saweng's amulets are traditionally associated with protection, Metta Maha Niyom, Baramee and prosperity.

This particular example carries additional significance through its reported history of being personally given by LP Saweng to a close Luksit before eventually entering my collection.

Historical Background

LP Saweng – Wat Sawangpod

LP Saweng was a respected former abbot of Wat Sawangpod in Pathum Thani Province, Thailand.

He was widely recognised among his followers for his knowledge of Buddhist meditation, sacred Wicha and traditional consecration practices.

One of the most important aspects of his spiritual background was his close relationship with LP Jong of Wat Na Tang Nok, the renowned master from Ayutthaya Province.

LP Saweng was regarded as one of LP Jong's leading disciples and is remembered for accompanying his master to various religious ceremonies and consecration events.

This relationship contributed greatly to the reputation of LP Saweng's early amulets, particularly those believed to have received blessings from both masters.

The Lineage of LP Jong

LP Jong of Wat Na Tang Nok was highly respected for his protective Wicha, meditation discipline and sacred objects associated with Klew Klad, the traditional belief in escaping danger and misfortune.

His influence extended beyond his own temple, reaching numerous disciples and respected monks throughout Central Thailand.

LP Saweng inherited teachings from this lineage and subsequently became an important master in his own right.

He was also associated with the training of later practitioners, including AC Piak, reflecting his role in preserving and passing down traditional sacred knowledge.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Origins of the Materials

The Phra Somdej was prepared using traditional sacred powder mixtures, with Pong Itthijae forming an important component of the reported formulation.

Pong Itthijae is a sacred powder associated with traditional Thai Buddhist Wicha. Its preparation commonly involves writing sacred characters and yantras upon a prepared surface before collecting the resulting powder for use in amulets.

The material is particularly associated with Metta Maha Niyom, personal influence and auspiciousness.

Additional sacred powders were incorporated into the traditional formulation, although the complete composition of this early batch is not fully documented.

The resulting amulet has a naturally aged, earthy appearance, with visible granules, darkened patches and an uneven powder surface.

These characteristics reflect the traditional production methods used for early pressed-powder amulets.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Ritual

The B.E. 2495 Phra Somdej is traditionally associated with a joint consecration involving LP Saweng and LP Jong of Wat Na Tang Nok.

As LP Saweng's teacher, LP Jong played an important role in the transmission of sacred Wicha and ritual knowledge to his disciple.

According to the account passed down by LP Saweng's close Luksit, this early Phra Somdej received blessings from both masters.

Within traditional Thai consecration practices, sacred powder amulets are prepared and blessed through Buddhist chanting, meditation and the application of protective Wicha.

The involvement of LP Jong is particularly significant because of his longstanding reputation for protective blessings and Klew Klad.

Although the precise chanting sequence and duration of the B.E. 2495 ceremony have not been independently established, the reported participation of both masters remains central to the batch's reputation.

Blessings and Effects

The Phra Somdej is traditionally regarded as an all-rounder amulet, combining several qualities associated with the lineage of LP Saweng and LP Jong.

  • Metta Maha Niyom: Encourages goodwill, harmonious relationships and support from others.

  • Wealth and Prosperity: Traditionally associated with business opportunities, financial stability and career development.

  • Klew Klad Protection: Believed to help the wearer avoid accidents, danger and unexpected misfortune.

  • Baramee and Authority: Supports confidence, personal influence, respect and leadership.

  • Overcoming Obstacles: Associated with smoother progress through personal and professional difficulties.

Modern Application

The Phra Somdej remains relevant to collectors and devotees seeking a traditional Buddhist amulet associated with both protection and everyday prosperity.

Business Owners and Working Professionals

Its Metta Maha Niyom and Baramee associations make it a popular choice among individuals seeking harmonious business relationships, career advancement and support from colleagues or superiors.

Individuals Seeking Protection

The influence of LP Jong's lineage makes this amulet particularly meaningful to those who value traditional Klew Klad protection during travel and daily activities.

Collectors of Early Central Thai Amulets

The B.E. 2495 issue represents an early period of LP Saweng's amulet production and is especially interesting because of its reported association with LP Jong.

For collectors who appreciate historical provenance, this particular example also carries the personal account of having been passed down directly from LP Saweng to one of his close Luksits.

Physical Details

This B.E. 2495 Phra Somdej is made from traditional sacred powders with a naturally aged, earthy-brown appearance. The front depicts a seated Buddha beneath a rounded arch, resting upon a distinctive multi-tiered base. The reverse is plain, showing darkened patches and natural powder ageing. The amulet retains its old pressed-powder character and is enclosed in a clear protective casing.

Personal Notes

What makes this particular Phra Somdej special to me is the history shared by its previous owner.

I collected it directly from a close Luksit of LP Saweng, who explained that the amulet had originally been passed down to him by LP Saweng himself.

He further recalled that this early B.E. 2495 Phra Somdej had been blessed by both LP Saweng and his master, LP Jong of Wat Na Tang Nok.

For an amulet produced more than seven decades ago, having such a personal account connected to its original ownership adds considerable meaning.

Beyond its traditional blessings, I appreciate this piece as a representation of the relationship between LP Jong and LP Saweng, two generations of respected masters whose teachings helped shape the sacred traditions of Central Thailand.

It is a Phra Somdej that I value not merely for its age, but for its lineage, history and the circumstances through which it entered my collection.
