Sacred Craftsmanship

This Lek Lai Lair Somdej was created by LP Saweng of Wat Sawangpod in B.E. 2546 (2003), using the highly regarded sacred substance known as Lek Lai Lair.

Unlike the smaller Pim Lek, this example is the Pim Klang — the medium-sized mould. The front follows the traditional Somdej composition, with the Buddha seated in meditation beneath the characteristic arch.

Of particular importance is the reverse, which bears the Yant Kropetch, a sacred yantra traditionally associated with protection, spiritual defence and the strengthening of the practitioner's baramee.

Lek Lai Lair is traditionally connected with difficult cave-gathering rites. According to accounts surrounding LP Saweng's lineage, suitable material was obtained only after prolonged ritual preparation, chanting and permission-seeking rites before being brought back for the creation of sacred objects.

Each amulet was individually formed from prepared sacred material, resulting in natural differences in surface, texture, colour and definition. These variations form part of the individual character of every surviving piece.

His ability to work with such material contributed significantly to the reputation of his Lek Lai amulets amongst collectors.

Origins of the Materials

The principal sacred substance is Lek Lai Lair, traditionally obtained from a sacred cave following ritual preparation.

Such material was not regarded as something to be casually removed. Traditional practice could involve meditation, chanting, offerings and rites requesting permission before collection.

Once obtained, the material was prepared for the production of sacred objects and amulets.
