Phra Pidta (Single-Sided), Luang Pu Pu – Wat Intharavihan, Bangkok
Historical Background
Phra Khru Thammanukul, known as Luang Pu Pu of Wat Intharavihan, was the foremost disciple of Somdej Phra Phutthachan (Toh Phromrangsi) of Wat Rakhang, creator of the Somdej Wat Rakhang amulet revered as the “Emperor of Thai Amulets.” Luang Pu Pu was entrusted to continue Somdej Toh’s spiritual legacy, mastering both deep meditation and the sacred sciences essential to wiccha and powder consecration.
He trained directly in the Five Great Powders:
-
Phong Itthije – power and determination
-
Phong Na Pathamang – protection and invulnerability
-
Phong Maharach – authority and charm
-
Phong Trinisinghe – removal of misfortune and obstacles
-
Phong Mul Kaccayana – metta, fortune, and loving-kindness
Luang Pu Pu often accompanied Somdej Toh on forest pilgrimages (tudong), refining both his meditative practice and his spiritual potency. After Somdej Toh’s passing, he continued overseeing the completion of the Giant Standing Buddha (Luang Pho Toh) at Wat Intharavihan and produced sacred amulets to support the temple’s construction and restoration.
Creation and Materials
Luang Pu Pu’s amulets were crafted across several periods, with early issues composed of dense, soft sacred powders—recognized by their fine grain, natural surface aging, and warm patina developed over more than a century. Each amulet embodies the meditative focus and spiritual energy of the Wat Intharavihan lineage.
This Phra Pidta (Single-Sided) is one of the temple’s most respected forms, representing complete withdrawal from defilements and mastery of inner stillness. The piece is housed in a custom silver frame, emphasizing its preservation and historical worth. The texture and coloration reflect early formulations of Somdej-style sacred powders—rich in herbal resins and ancient mineral binders—blessed through multiple meditation sessions.
Legacy and Influence
The earliest batches of Luang Pu Pu’s Phra Pidta were distributed to civil servants, merchants, and temple patrons who contributed to the Buddha statue’s completion. Accounts from that era consistently describe career advancement, business prosperity, and protection from harm, reinforcing its reputation as a charm of elevation and safeguarding.
Even today, senior officials, judges, and long-standing temple committee members continue to wear Luang Pu Pu’s Phra Pidta, upholding an unbroken tradition that extends from the time of Somdej Toh himself.
This single-sided version, preserved in its natural tone and protected within a finely engraved silver casing, remains one of the purest representations of Luang Pu Pu’s craftsmanship—a blend of sacred heritage, spiritual discipline, and enduring protective power.
